Whitening
Brighten your smile and unlock your confidence.
Acheive the smile others wish they had.
Surveys conducted by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry consistently demonstrate that “whiter teeth” rates highest when respondents are asked what they would like to improve about their smile. Choosing a whitening method that is right for you depends on several different factors.
Home Whitening Systems
Methods to whiten your smile at home are numerous and include toothpastes, mouth rinses, whitening strips and gels, as well as tray-delivered gel treatments.
We offer pre-filled home whitening trays which are more effective than over-the-counter systems which have weaker concentrations of peroxide. Excellent results can be achieved in just 20-40 minutes of treatment for 7-10 consecutive days
In-Office Whitening Systems
Tooth whitening in the dental office is more effective than other methods due to the strength of peroxide derivatives being used. During this procedure, a light-cured protective layer of acrylic is carefully painted on the gums where they meet the teeth. The whitening agent is then applied to visible areas of the teeth and activated with a LED light. The procedure is carefully monitored, and the duration of the treatment can easily be modified if any symptoms of tooth sensitivity develop. Most people find in-office whitening a very relaxing and enjoyable experience!
Things to consider before whitening
Whitening agents do not change the color of existing porcelain restorations or fillings. Therefore, whitening may be considered prior to new fillings, crowns, bridges, veneers, etc. in the aesthetic (visible when smiling) zone these so that the desired lighter shade can be matched. In turn, older, darker restorations can replaced to match the desired lighter shade.

to answer your questions
Take a look through our most frequently asked questions to alleviate any confusion you may have about tooth whitening at Carter | Callaway.
Wow! My Teeth Look Great…Now What?
The effects of any whitening system are not permanent and will occasionally need to be repeated to maintain a brighter smile. In addition to keeping the teeth clean with good oral hygiene practices and regular professional dental cleanings, smoking cessation and limiting intake of food and drinks that stain the teeth will prolong the effects of tooth whitening.
Does whitening cause tooth sensitivity?
Whitening sometimes causes temporary tooth sensitivity, which varies from individual to individual. Sensitivity can be minimized by using certain toothpastes containing potassium nitrate (such as Sensodyne), which helps block small micropores in the dentin layer. Application of topical fluoride after in-office whitening is also beneficial in reducing sensitivity.
What kinds of food and drink stain teeth?
- Beverages such as red wine, coffee/dark teas, dark sports drinks and sodas
- Dark balsamic vinegars, soy sauce, curry, and tomato sauce
- Richly colored berries and juices including blueberries, pomegranates,
and grapes
Do over-the-counter whitening methods work?
Whitening toothpastes produce minimal results and often have abrasive qualities.
Whitening strips and paint-on products feature a relatively weak concentration of hydrogen peroxide gel.
