The Importance of
Routine Cleanings & Exams
In addition to daily home care, routine dental cleanings are an essential part of maintaining oral health. Periodic dental exams are important in detecting cavities that are not advanced enough to cause pain as well as gum disease that can advance to recession and tooth loss. Routine exams can also help detect problems that lead to excessive tooth wear, such as grinding and/or poorly aligned teeth and bite problems.

to answer your questions
Take a look through our most frequently asked questions to alleviate any confusion you may have about routine cleanings and dental exams at Carter | Callaway.
If I am brushing and flossing my teeth as recommended, why do I need regular dental cleanings and exams?
Even with the very best routine daily oral hygiene, small amounts of food and bacteria (plaque) may be left behind in hard-to-reach areas. Over time, plaque and residual food can be the basis to start a cavity and/or gum disease. Plaque that remains on the surface of the tooth or root can harden by minerals in the saliva and form what is known as tartar/calculus. Once hardened, tartar/calculus cannot be removed by brushing or flossing and must be removed by your hygienist with special dental instruments.
Why are periodic dental X-rays needed?
Periodic (usually annual) X-rays use a minimal amount of radiation and are used to detect cavities that may be difficult or impossible to see during a visual examination.
What special oral hygiene care does a crown or bridge require?
Crowns and bridges require diligent home care including daily brushing and flossing (just like all teeth) and routine office cleanings with your hygienist. Bridges require special flossing attention to remove food and plaque between the support teeth.
Does my dental insurance cover cleanings and exams?
Most dental insurances cover routine cleanings at least every 6 months. Exams and X-rays are usually covered once a year but may vary from policy to policy.
