What to expect when

having a tooth pulled

If one or more teeth need to be removed, we will ensure that the area is completely numb using local anesthetics. Every effort will be taken to remove the tooth comfortably and minimize your anxiety, as we know that having a tooth pulled is no fun.

We may prescribe medications to help any post-extraction discomfort. In most instances, alternating over-the-counter acetaminophen (Tylenol) and ibuprofen (Motrin) as directed is very effective.

Bone Preservation

Preserving bone in the area where the tooth was removed is essential when a future implant is planned or when the infected tooth has caused significant bone loss. Ridge preservation is an additional step sometimes taken immediately after the tooth is removed in order to minimize bone loss during the healing process.

1. Immediately after the tooth is removed, the socket is thoroughly irrigated with sterile saline and any residual infective tissue removed.

2. A small volume of sterile resorbable calcium apatite and collagen grafting material is gently packed into the socket. This grafting material stabilizes the blood clot and acts as a scaffolding to enhance bone regeneration in the area and prevent invasion of faster-growing gum tissue.

3. Resorbable sutures keep the grafting material in place. Complications such as dry socket are exceptionally infrequent when bone preservation is done.

We take time
to answer your questions

Take a look through our most frequently asked questions to alleviate any confusion you may have about extractions at Carter | Callaway.

Can I eat and drink normally after an extraction?

The local anesthetic used during your extraction will wear off after just a few minutes. It is completely safe to start eating and drinking at that point, however we recommend limiting the diet to softer foods for a few days. It is important to avoid drinking from a straw for the first few days after having a tooth pulled, as the sucking motion may disturb the clotting process.

How long will it take to recover after having my tooth pulled?

Minor bleeding from the extraction site is common but should resolve within the first 24 hours. We will provide you with gauze to bite on, which should be changed periodically until bleeding stops. It is a good idea to take some well-deserved rest after a dental extraction. Avoiding heavy physical exertion for 24-48 hours is generally recommended. Application of a cold compress to the face may be beneficial for minor facial swelling or discomfort.

Does my dental insurance cover extractions?

Most dental insurance policies routinely cover both emergency dental evaluation and extractions. Our insurance specialists will review eligibility or coverage details when treatment is planned.
