Laser Treatment?
Use of lasers sounds like science fiction but is common for certain dental conditions. Dental soft-tissue lasers use high energy focused at the tip of a pen-like device to efficiently cut through gum tissue without bleeding. Conditions that are commonly treated with soft tissue lasers include:

- Frenectomy (removal of tight bands of gum tissue that limit tongue movement or may cause recession where the gum and tooth meet)
- Removal of excess gum tissue causing infection when overlying partially erupted wisdom teeth (pericoronitis
- Controlling bleeding and removal of gum tissue overlying an area where a filling needs to be placed
- Contouring gum margins in highly visible areas to optimize symmetry and overall aesthetics
What to expect
when undergoing
laser treatment
Soft-tissue laser treatment of gum tissue is an extremely easy and comfortable procedure. A local anesthetic is used on the area of gum tissue to be treated. Several passes of the soft tissue laser is usually all that is needed to remove excess gum tissue. The procedure lasts 10-15 minutes on average.

What is the recovery period like after having laser treatment of the gums?
Very minor soreness of the treated area lasting 24-48 hours is expected. No limitations on eating, drinking, or physical activity are needed.
Are any additional precautions needed when being treated with a soft-tissue dental laser?
You and your dental team will wear special eye protection during the laser procedure.
Is laser treatment usually covered by my dental insurance?
