What Are Dental Sealants?

Dental sealants are a painless and effective way to prevent up to 80% of cavities in the back teeth, which tend to have deep pits and grooves in the chewing surfaces. Sealants are recommended for all children upon eruption of the permanent molars and in adults who are at higher cavity risk. Sealants are thin resin coatings painted on teeth to protect them from cavities. They flow into the deep grooves of teeth and harden immediately.

Sealants prevent the most cavities when applied soon after permanent molars come into the mouth (around age 6 for 1st molars and age 12 for 2nd molars)

How long do sealants last?

Once applied, sealants protect against 80% of cavities for 2 years and continue to protect against 50% of cavities for up to 4 years. Over time, sealants do wear away due to abrasion from chewing and can be easily replaced.

Is placing sealants an easy process?

Sealant placement is a quick, easy, and painless procedure that requires no local anesthesia and can usually be completed during a routine dental cleaning and exam.

What adults would be considered at higher risk to develop cavities?

Adults who: 

  • Frequently consume foods and beverages that are high in sugar
  • May not regularly brush, floss, or use fluoride-containing toothpaste or mouth rinse
  • Have a history of dental cavities requiring fillings
What other risk factors are associated with gum disease?

Certain factors increase the risk for gum disease / periodontitis, including:
