What Are
Crowns & Bridges?
A crown is sometimes needed to provide protection for a tooth that has been compromised by a large cavity or has already cracked or broken.
A bridge can be considered a multiple-unit crown that replaces one or more missing teeth and is permanently cemented to adjacent support teeth. Esthetic ceramic infused with other elements to increase strength and fracture resistance is the most common material used.
Crowns and bridges are exceptionally lifelike in appearance and special care is taken to mimic the shape, shade, and other aesthetic features of the surrounding natural teeth.
What to
expect during
a Crown or bridge restorative
procedure
After local anesthetic is given, areas of the tooth that are diseased by a cavity are removed. Voids are replaced by a filling material and the tooth is shaped in such a way to optimize strength and retention of the crown.
The shape of the prepared tooth is captured by a digital scan (or impression) and the crown is made by a dental laboratory.
A temporary crown is made during the first visit which provides protection for the tooth until the permanent crown can be delivered several days later.

How many visits does it take to get a crown or bridge?
Two visits are generally needed. The tooth is repaired and a temporary crown/bridge is placed during the first visit, with the permanent restoration cemented during the return visit several days later.
Does a crown or bridge ever come off?
Crowns and bridges are cemented with exceptionally strong dental adhesives and rarely come loose.
What special oral hygiene care does a crown or bridge require?
Crowns and bridges require diligent home care including daily brushing and flossing (just like all teeth) and routine office cleanings with your hygienist. Bridges require special flossing attention to remove food and plaque between the support teeth.
Are crowns and bridges usually covered by my dental insurance?
