What can be done about sensitive teeth?
Sensitivity of the teeth to hot and cold food and drinks is an exceptionally common problem and varies in severity from person to person. Once a thorough examination of the teeth and gums is done to rule out other potential problems like cavities or gum disease, usually a toothpaste specifically designed to reduce sensitivity is helpful. These types of toothpaste work by temporarily blocking microscopic pores in exposed surfaces of tooth roots.
Why are electric toothbrushes so great?
A good quality electric toothbrush produces many more brush strokes during the recommended two minutes of twice daily brushing than you can do with a manual brush. Areas that have minimal space for the brush head are cleaned much more effectively by an electric toothbrush – you simply hold the brush in place without moving it back and forth. Many people apply too much pressure to the tooth and gum tissue when brushing. This may lead to gum recession and wearing away of thin enamel at the base of the tooth. Electric toothbrushes regulate applied pressure by pausing when pressed down too hard.
What are some other things besides daily brushing and flossing that can be done to improve my oral health?
Mouth rinses containing fluoride may provide additional cavity prevention benefits when used after brushing/flossing and before bedtime. Persons with high caries risk and/or dry mouth syndrome may benefit from use of a prescription-strength fluoride toothpaste. Gum or mints containing xylitol may reduce cavity risk as well, as this artificial sweetener is harmful to bacteria that cause cavities.
